Waste Management and Carbon Markets

Waste management projects offer one of the most immediate and measurable opportunities for emission reductions. By capturing or avoiding methane from organic waste streams, these projects can generate verified carbon credits while improving environmental and public health outcomes. We help project developers assess whether waste initiatives can be credibly certified and how to structure them for long-term carbon value.

Our Value Proposition

Follow on

Methane is 28–34× more potent than CO₂ over 100 years

~18–20% of global methane emissions come from waste and wastewater

Immediate emission reductions once methane capture or treatment systems are operational

Our Challenge

Organic waste in emerging markets is largely unmanaged, leading to uncontrolled methane emissions from landfills, dumpsites, and open waste disposal. Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas, and emissions from waste activities often go unmeasured and unmonetised. While carbon markets offer a pathway to finance better waste solutions, many projects struggle to establish reliable baselines, demonstrate additionality, or design robust monitoring systems.
At the same time, waste projects face increasing scrutiny from standards and buyers. Methodological complexity, data gaps, and operational risks can delay registration or reduce issued credits. Without clear feasibility assessments and conservative carbon accounting, developers risk overestimating revenues or under-delivering on climate outcomes—weakening investor confidence and slowing project deployment.

How We Help

We provide developers with a clear, evidence-based view of whether waste management activities can generate credible carbon credits. Our assessments focus on realistic baselines, methane capture potential, and conservative credit estimates—helping clients understand expected volumes, costs, and timelines before investing.
We also guide projects through the technical and methodological requirements of waste-related carbon standards. By translating complex rules into practical steps, we help developers structure projects that meet verification requirements while remaining operationally and financially viable.

Our Services for Waste Management Projects

Waste Carbon Feasibility Assessment

We assess waste streams, baseline scenarios, methane generation potential, and project
eligibility to determine suitability for carbon certification.

Methodology & Crediting Pathway Design

We identify appropriate standards and methodologies for landfill gas, organic waste treatment, or wastewater projects and map the full crediting pathway.

MRV & Monitoring Framework Design

We support the design of monitoring systems covering waste quantities, methane capture, flaring or utilisation, and verification requirements.

Waste Project Pre-Feasibility Assessment

A rapid review of waste availability, technology options, indicative emission reductions, and high-level economics to support early decision-making.
